Hello!
And if you are just joining us, welcome to the second week of prompts to keep the pen moving over summer. You don’t need to begin at the start (although if you want to check out any of the earlier prompts then you can do so here).
Throughout August we are trying out some short, simple daily prompts that can be as much about stopping for a moment and writing a few lines as spending hours on crafting a beautiful verse.
Take the time you have, don’t take it too seriously, see what comes up.
If you are here to read some poetry, then here are a couple of wonderful poems written by the community in the week that was:
Summer is always yellow by
had me feeling glowy.
And I really liked this, Just a Bit of a Break From The Norm by
on Notes. It’s the song that immediately springs to mind for me come the summertime and I like how it twisted itself in a different direction to where I imagined. It made me think.Ok here we go, another week of prompts…
Poetry of the Summer - Week Two
It is 6.30am and….
Choose your own time and write from that moment.
You could use this prompt to free write for a few pages and then see if you can pick a sentence, a chunk of writing or an image or two and slot something back together?
Take inspiration from Bath, by Amy Lowell. This is from The Complete Poetical Works of Amy Lowell. Found via The Poetry Foundation.

Write an epistolary poem for the back of a postcard, use the small rectangular writing space to shape your poem’s form. Or include some visuals? There are some great examples of ‘postcard poems’ on the Young Poets Network here. Paid subscribers - this might help with our IRL postcard project that some of us are taking part in this month!
Childhood summers
In my dream…
Surprising delight
In praise of xxxx in summertime (pick your thing(s), can be as obvious or weird as you like)
Are you planning to join in daily this week? I’m very much treating these as reminders to get ‘something’ down on the page, even if it is during a five minute car journey or sat at on a bench. Snippets and tiny attempts are very much my thing this summer.
Thank you so much to everyone who has been sharing their art. It is school holidays for me at the moment so I’ve had less time on a screen. But when I’ve had odd moments to sit down with a cup of tea I have loved the invites to read some poetry.
I am hopeful that the week ahead will bring more of the same. Keep on sharing, please do.
If you tag me #poetryofthesummer
then I can try and re-stack some of them to inspire us.Nelly x
P.s Tell me, any of these prompts immediately stand out for you?
Such an honour to be featured here, thank you Nelly!
I happened to see this week's prompts just before 6.30am, so nearly wrote a piece at that moment! But since other family duties called, I set the muse aside to pick up some other time. Quarter past four? Twenty to twelve? We'll see... :)
Thank you so much for including my poem, Nelly! I know it wouldn't have been written without this challenge, so thank you again for giving us these prompts.
