Hello, hello,
Something a little bit different for this weeks Poetry (pen) Pal letter.
If you missed the post introducing how the month ahead is going to work, then you can read it again here. A month of daily prompts inspiring us to write more poetry over the summer. A bit of a fresh challenge to fire up our creativity.
I wanted to stick to the schedule of posting every Sunday so it’s not an August challenge per se (damn those dates not quite lining up), it’s a month-long challenge that runs through August. And starts today.
Hopefully that makes sense. 28 short daily writing prompts, sent out in weekly chunks.
Feel free to come back and join in the big share on Friday (for new readers, this is the normal routine - poetry to read / a poetry prompt on a Sunday, poetry written is then shared via a Chat thread on a Friday. If you’re subscribed then you’ll get a reminder). Come back and share the poem that you are most happy with from the week so far, the first line of a poem which you might return to, or even just to say that you wrote nothing whatsoever. The chat is always so full of enthusiasm and encouragement.
Hopefully, fingers crossed, the poetry will start flowing. I was thrilled to hear how many wanted to play along. I’m excited. Hope you are too.
And for those who come here mainly to read poetry, or who don’t need any additional poetry writing fun over the coming weeks, fear not. It’s not going to be all about the writing. From next week I’ll pick a handful of poems from the previous weeks efforts to share within this Sunday post. I’m sure we are in for a treat.
Ok, Week One, here we go…
Poetry in Summer - Week One (August 4th - 10th)
Summer in three lines
Lying on the grass
Use a lyric from a favourite (summer) song
The dog days of summer
Tove Janson, The Summer Book 5. Summer colour
6. The summer offers some advice…
7. Cruel summer
I would love to read (or even hear, watch) anything you create along the way. If you tag me
#poetryinsummer then I can re-stack any Notes when I can so that we can all be inspired ongoing throughout the week. I will also pick a handful of poems to share within next weeks Sunday pen pal letter (with your permission).Oh and if you’re on Instagram then please do feel free to say hello over there, I’m @nellythewriter.
And yes, back with our usual sharing prompt via chat on Friday too.
If you’re not subscribed yet then hello! You’ve found us! Come and join in what I hope will be a month of great poetry :)
Nelly x
P.s What you thinking - try to write daily (or attempt to), or just pick and choose? I’m keen to try daily but I’m going to be VERY lenient with myself because, well, it’s summer.
I haven't written much either recently though I have mulled many lines in my head. I have really engaged with the first prompt and am trying not to whizz through them all in one go. it's so lovely having nice things to ponder on at the moment. a peaceful poetry place for my brain to sit back and chill in. Thank you once again Nelly.
Eeek! This looks so fun!
