I love the idea of practicing a poetic life. Your post also brought to mind one night when I was camping and had this idea in the shower at the park but I had to get back to the campsite to write it down so I kept saying the lines over and over so I’d remember them by the time I got to my journal in the tent. Which seems like a poem in itself!

Always when the lights go out, you snuggle into the duvet, relax and BAM! words hit your brain, words for a poem you didn’t even realise you were working on.

ALWAYS as soon as you’ve switched that switch 🤣

I love all of this. And it connects me to a thought I was sharing last week about a distinction between Poems with a Capital P, and poem attempts which are so much less intimidating. Also, regarding the shower ideas, I was once complaining about having my best ideas in the shower but not being able to write them down. My son, then probably 10 or 11, left the room and returned with a red shower crayon, like children use to draw in the bath. We still had them lying around, although both my kids were a bit too old for them. I've kept it handy ever since.

And also… why is it ALWAYS when you have no pen???!!! I sometimes return from a run just muttering lines over and over to myself

Ha, I love this. The idea of you scribbling poems with one of those kids bath crayons is just too cute. And also, new way to get the kids writing poetry 👀😳. Ahhh yes. Yes. That’s it exactly, poetry with a capital P. That’s such a good distinction. I missed that note so thank you for letting me in on it x

Jumping out of the shower to write down an observation is exactly the type of energy I want to bring to my poetry practice this year!!

Your way of defining poetry as practice reminds me how important it is to get my ideas down before judgment gets in the way. Good luck with your goal of 100 poems in the new year!

Interesting Nelly. I did like the poem though it took me back to teenage years which were rather awful. But that shows it worked. My notes document is my practise I feel. So much revision, snippets (some used eventually and more discarded). I hope for 100 this year too.
