It’s National Poetry Day in the UK today. An extra opportunity (as if we needed one) to talk about how awesome poetry is. Happy poetry day fellow poetry lovers!!!
So I wondered if we could create a list of some of our favourite poems?
I wondered if we could all share in the comments, not our favourite EVER (unless you know your favourite ever but I find that REALLY hard), but rather just a poem that you’ve read (or heard) and loved lately. Might be from here on Substack, or a book, or wherever.
And if you wanted to add a little bit of why you loved it, even better. That would be extra beautiful.
Maybe it’s the form that is so damn accomplished. Or just that it stuck with you and you were still thinking about it hours later, or that it came at just the right time.
I wonder how many we can get on our list of (current) favourites? Ten? More? Eeek, I can’t wait (the theme this year is counting, more on that at the weekend 😉)
Here’s one from me to get started. I re-discovered this poem this week. Don’t you love it when that happens? When you find a poem again and remember how much you like it. The first line has become one that me and my husband say to each other on occasion - passing a tractor and shouting TRACTOR before realising you don’t have any kids with you. That’s a great poem, one that has woven its way into your life!
This is Maggie Smith and Poem Beginning with a Retweet:
I’ve earmarked an hour for myself later to enjoy some words - an hour with a mug of tea, a large piece of cake (yep), no interruptions, just me and a load of gorgeous writing.
Can you help to curate a sort of poem reading list. Ooh I hope so.

P.s obviously I’ll be back later to add another one in the comments, ha.
I love this idea! I tend to write lighthearted poems (although not always...we're allowed dark days), and I seem to have started a series I call Weather Forecast. Anyway, in a similar vein (but hers is way more fun), I love this one by Sue Cowling :
The Laughter Forecast
Today will be humorous
With some giggly patches,
Scattered outbreaks of chuckling in the south
And smiles spreading in the east later,
Widespread chortling
Increasing to gale-force guffaws towards evening.
The outlook for tomorrow
Is hysterical.
(I wish I'd written this one!!!)

Happy poetry day!! Love this post.
Here’s one of my favourites…
DANGEROUS COATS
By Sharon Owens
Someone clever once said
Women were not allowed pockets
In case they carried leaflets
To spread sedition
Which means unrest
To you & me
A grandiose word For commonsense
Fairness
Kindness
Equality
So ladies, start sewing
Dangerous coats
Made of pockets & sedition
